I never played this. I went straight from Master of Orion II to Starcraft, somehow missing Age of Empires. Was it really that good? AoE2 kind of sucked.
BLASPHEMY! Age of Empires 2 was one of the greatest games of all time and you know it’s true!
Sorry, really didn’t like it. If I remember correctly, my complaints were:
1) The interface was clunky and hard to use
2) The sides felt too similar to play
3) The economy was really simple (almost entirely a non-factor later in the game)

I’ve dug up a copy of Age of Empires III, the game improved so much in two sequels. (AoEII and AoM)
That’s usually what happens. It’s considered bad form to have a sequel that has worse controls, interface, and gameplay.

My soldiers were really terrible. Traitorous little B***tards. That’s why monks made up the backbone of my foot army. Have the infantry escort the siege gear and have the monks escort the infantry. The calvary does the heavy lifting in the vangaurd.
Cavalry spam was my favorite strategy; half of them died to siege engines but the other half would always come through for me.

This is pure win! AoE 1&2 were the greatest RTS games ever, shame they never did a modern version of AoE 1 again. Instead AoE 3 with the Colonisation of America, which nobody really cares about as a scenario. Bring back the Greeks and Romans now!

Its not worth buying it, Microsoft closed Ensemble Studios because Age of Empires was not a profitable game that would suck up your pocket such as modern games are.

So I prefer donating directly to the AoE developers rather than purchasing the game or wasting my money in a mmorpg-ish AoE, Microsoft can kiss my ass, they’re the ones destroying PC Gaming.
What makes you assume downloading is not legit? Ever heard of digital distribution models? Steam? EA Download Manager? Gametap?
Also, PC gaming isn’t being destroyed, and if it was, it would be as a result of/greedy developers who want 50 bucks for a game that is so crappy it seems like they only spent 50 bucks making it. Or MMORPGs, those are also the biggest threat to PC gaming. Most people that play MMOs don’t continually buy new games. They stick to their one game.
