It’s from a manga/anime called Deathnote where a kid finds a notebook that when you right someone’s name it it and you know what they look like they will die. However, I think the name has to remain in the book for it to work, so I think of this more as a threat, like “oh man I totally coulda done it, you best watch yo’self son!”

Nope. It’ll work even if it’s just a scrap from the Death Note. In fact, Light uses the fact that it just has to be paper from a Death Note to his advantage several times. The smalles piece he’s uses (that we know of) was a small scrap he kept in the false bottom of a watch.

it can, in fact work even if the page is outside of the notebook, as long as it is not written on several different pages (rule 1.1 subsection 6)
it can, however be written on both side and still take effect.
also, it doesn’t have to be written with a pen/pencil/marker.according to rule1.5, subsection 3, any medium of writing (make up, blood,etc.) will work as long as it is ledgible.
according to rule 1.3 subsection 2, once a name has been written in the notebook, the death is irreversable, it will happen.
according to rule 1.2, subsect. 21 and 22:even if the notebook or page it was written on is destroyed, the death will still take effect.
rule 1.5 subsection 4 says thatthe pages never run out .

Well, light sacrificed his deathnote when he is locked up so that he isn’t suspected of being kira. Later Misa gets that deathnote when he tricks rem into killing himself and uses his deathnote instead (well the deathnote that belonged to Misa) so he no longer has a shinigami towards the end of serialization.
Actually, he still has Ryuk at the end, who then kills him.
